Vacation training co-ordinator: James Bekker (Tel: +27 21 808 4951)

Students must complete two sessions of vacation training during their studies. Each session must be at least 3 uninterrupted weeks long. Industrial Engineering students are generally uncertain about the expectations of requirements for vacation training, and even who to contact in the Department if questions arise. This is particularly applicable to 2nd, and to a lesser extent, to 3rd year students for whom the Department and its personnel are fairly unknown. The convenor for vacation training in the Department is Mr James Bekker. He is responsible for all questions regarding vacation training, as well as the coordination thereof. The following are general problems and questions that students have with regard to vacation training:

Why vacation training?

Where do I get a vacation training position?

Where can I work?

When must I start to do vacation training?

When must the vacation-training report be handed in?

The formal requirements for vacation training

The student must prepare a safety guide specific to the laboratory equipment and tools they will be using. The safety documents to be completed are Form 1.1 and Form 1.2 (Links Below). These forms must signed by the relevant responsible persons and handed in at B2003 at Amelia Henning or Karina Smith.
Form 1.1 – General safe rules Industrial Engineering
Form 1.2 – Work specific Safety Instructions – Industrial Engineering
