The Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University annually honours exceptional individuals whose dedication and hard work form the backbone of the Faculty’s success. These awards recognise staff members who go above and beyond in their roles, ensuring that our faculty remains a place of excellence and innovation.
This year, the Department of Industrial Engineering is proud to celebrate Elize Williams, who received the Technical Staff Award for her outstanding contribution.
A Role That Goes Beyond Expectations
Since joining the department in April 2012, Elize has served as our senior cleaning staff member. Her role, often behind the scenes yet indispensable, goes far beyond maintaining cleanliness. Through her commitment, she creates an environment that is orderly, welcoming, and conducive to productivity and learning.
Consider the staircase we climb, the windowsills we pass, and the open workspaces where students concentrate on changing the world, Elize ensures that each space is spotless and inviting. The breakaway area is always neat, with cups and utensils organised, making it a welcoming place for students and staff alike. Her attention to detail and consistency transform everyday spaces into places where innovation thrives.
Over her 13 years in the department, Elize has witnessed countless students grow from undergraduates to graduates and even postgraduate achievers, earning master’s and PhD degrees. She has also seen former students return from industry to join the department as academics, a journey she finds deeply rewarding to observe.
More Than a Job – A Source of Care
Beyond her professional duties, Elize is a source of warmth and kindness. Her friendly greetings and genuine concern for staff and students brighten our corridors and foster a sense of community. She encourages students during exam times and oral presentations, often reminding them:
“Just be yourself. Don’t stress and speak from the heart.”
Her care extends beyond the building. Elize notices when someone seems lost, offers help, and always has an ear to listen. She makes the best of difficult situations and ensures that everyone feels supported.
Why She Goes the Extra Mile
Elize believes her effort is driven by the respect and kindness she experiences in the department. She feels valued and supported, which motivates her to give her best every day. She often speaks with gratitude about Prof Joubert van Eeden, Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering, describing him as a leader who genuinely cares about staff well-being, and about Department Manager Anel de Beer, whom she regards as a trusted friend. Their compassion during personal hardships has left a lasting impact on her. This sense of belonging inspires Elize to create the same atmosphere of care for others.
In Her Own Words
When asked about working in the Department of Industrial Engineering, Elize shared:
“I’ve never worked at a place where people are so friendly and welcoming. I look forward to coming to work in the mornings and working with the staff and students. I enjoy my work. There’s no negative pressure.”
A Lasting Impact
Elize’s influence is evident even beyond daily interactions. Industrial Engineering alumni, such as Martin du Plessis, Frederick van Zyl, and Johan Mocke, acknowledged her in their dissertations, a testament to the impact Elize and her support team have on students.
We congratulate Elize Williams on this well-deserved honour and thank her for her unwavering dedication, which makes our department a better place every day. Her story is a powerful reminder that every role matters and that excellence often shines brightest in the quiet, consistent acts of care that keep our community thriving.
